HYDRAULIC SYSTEM

DEGREASING, PICKLING and HOT OIL FLUSHING

The following procedure for DEGREASING, PICKLING and HOT OIL FLUSHING of carbon steel hydraulic piping systems is submitted by BCS Inc.

Our process is a multi-stage cleaning procedure designed to insure the cleanest system possible prior to system start up. The objective of our cleaning is to insure complete removal of mill scale, rust, carbon, grease, oil, dirt, dust and construction debris any of which could greatly affect system performance pressures, oil cleanliness criteria or create costly damage to pumps, impellers, cylinders, valves or actuators.

In order to insure a complete and thorough cleaning of systems, as based upon NAS 1638 CLASS 6 standards, one factor is of prime importance; VELOCITY. The minimum acceptable velocity of 15 foot per second is achieved by properly matching the pump size to the system layout. A system containing numerous branches or tributaries requires higher pressures than one with straight lengths of pipe. Only by creating a very high velocity of the cleansing fluids will complete removal of debris trapped in low lying sections occur. Fluid velocity and turbulence must be achieved in order to dislodge impurities that are stuck or pushed onto the pipe walls. By creating a vortex in the fluid the impurities are pushed into the cleansing fluid stream. High velocities also create chemical friction within the piping system causing the oils to achieve elevated temperatures which will reduce fluid viscosity and accelerate the filtration process.

Past practice in hydraulic system flushing has simply been to continually circulate and filter system oil until such a time as the oil is deemed "clean". This can be a very time consuming process requiring numerous man hours, filter beds and scrapping of expensive system oil. Often mill scale dislodges from the "clean" piping walls only much later creating numerous and costly problems as mentioned above.

Over the years we at BCS Inc. have developed a process which we know is THE most effective when attempting to achieve system cleanliness. Our multi-stage process comprises four (4) main operations which are as follows:

  • STAGE 1: DEGREASING and RINSING (alkaline).
  • STAGE 2: PICKLING (acid).
  • STAGE 3: CLEANSING OIL FLUSH.
  • STAGE 4: HYDRAULIC OIL FLUSH.

The alkaline and acid cleaning stages have greatly reduced the flushing oil circulation time requirement. This is due to the fact that the viscosity of both our alkaline; ALKLEAN® and our acid based chemical; BIOPASS® is near 1.1 which facilitates the creation of turbulence within the piping helping in the removal of all particulate. By performing the alkaline and acid stages prior to the oil flushing BCS Inc. can insure removal of most of the forgein matter and particulate before the oil is introduced to the system.

Our second innovation has been the use of a cleansing oil stage just after the pickling stage. This dehumidifying oil not only removes any traces of chemicals left within the system from our previous cleaning sequence it also coats the piping with an oil compatible with most system oils. This will greatly reduce the possibility of pipe rusting prior to the introduction of the customers final system oil.

Our third innovation is the use of ON-SITE oil sample analysis using our portable microscopic oil analyzing kit. This kit determines cleanliness levels to MICRON size as well as enabling our technicians to actually analyze the type of impurities found in the oil. By being able to perform this service on site we eliminate the guess-work and delays previously associated with non quantitative analysis methods.
