Passivation

Passivation is a chemical process used to enhance the corrosion resistance of metals by creating a protective outer layer that prevents further oxidation.

This is most commonly applied to metals such as stainless steel, aluminum, and titanium. During passivation, a thin, stable oxide film forms on the surface of the metal, either naturally through exposure to air or intentionally through chemical treatment.

For example, in stainless steel, the presence of chromium allows the formation of a thin layer of chromium oxide, which acts as a barrier to moisture and oxygen, effectively preventing rust. Industrial passivation often involves treating the metal with acids like nitric or citric acid to remove surface contaminants and promote the formation of this protective layer.

BCS Inc. has developed

  • Advanced cleaning technologies utilizing their proprietary line of biodegradable, non-flammable, acid-based chemicals—BIOPASS®, BIOPASS II®, and BIOPASS III®. These specialized formulations are used in the passivation of stainless steel piping, tanks, equipment, and systems.

  • Unlike conventional industry chemicals, which are often highly corrosive and can etch or damage stainless steel surfaces, the BIOPASS® line is engineered to clean effectively without compromising surface integrity.

These solutions remove all free iron while preserving the smooth finish of stainless steel, helping to prevent future issues in system circulation and extending equipment life.

Certified to ISO 9001:2015, BCS Inc. delivers comprehensive quality documentation and project-specific packaging. They strictly adhere to industry standards including ASTM A380/A380-25, ASTM A967/A967M-25, ASME BPE 2024, and testing in accordance with ASME B31.3 for process piping systems. Their Preventive Maintenance Program (PMP) is supported by an on-site Quality Control Team that conducts thorough testing to ensure the most effective solutions for each passivation requirement.

BCS Inc. also offers a complete turnkey passivation service designed to streamline validation and system commissioning. Each project includes a detailed validation report documenting all chemical agents used, their quantities, contact times, temperatures, circulation pressures, and pH levels.

Upon completion, they perform Ferroxyl testing at multiple points in the system to confirm the removal of all free iron. A Certificate of Compliance , a validated procedure, and bore-scope inspection reports are also provided to ensure the highest quality results before final sign-off. Passivation is a crucial process in industries where corrosion resistance and cleanliness are essential, and with advanced, safe chemical formulations like those offered by BCS Inc., it is possible to maintain the integrity and longevity of stainless steel systems more effectively than ever.
